AEO (answer engine optimization)

AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the practice of making a site's content easy for AI answer engines to retrieve, quote and attribute, rather than optimizing for a position in a list of links.

The name came out of the featured-snippet and voice-assistant era, when the result a searcher saw stopped being ten links and started being one answer. Applied to ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews it means the same thing at a larger scale: the engine composes a reply from sources it retrieved, and the question is whether your page is one of them. In practice the work splits in two. Write passages that answer the question in their first sentence and survive being quoted alone, and make sure software can reach, render and parse the page they sit on.

AEO and GEO are near-synonyms with different lineages. AEO grew out of practitioner vocabulary about answers and snippets. GEO was coined in a 2023 research paper about generative engines. Vendors now use both for the same service, and nobody should be sold an AEO strategy and a GEO strategy as separate line items. Where the emphasis differs at all, AEO leans on the direct answer and GEO on the generated one.

The honest limit is that no engine publishes ranking factors for any of this, so AEO cannot be audited against a documented spec the way a robots.txt rule can. What is checkable is the input side: whether AI crawlers get a 200, whether the primary copy is in the HTML response, whether the answer sits under a heading that matches the question. Those are requests you can make and answers you can score, which is where a readiness audit starts.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO different from SEO?

It is a subset with a different target. Traditional SEO wants a ranked link, AEO wants the passage an engine lifts into its answer. The crawlability and content fundamentals are shared, so AEO is rarely a reason to rebuild an SEO program.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They are near-synonyms. AEO comes from answer and snippet vocabulary, GEO from a 2023 paper on generative engines, and the day-to-day work they describe is the same.

How do I know whether AEO is working?

Measure the output by sampling AI answers for a fixed prompt set over time, and measure the input by checking that crawlers can reach and render the pages you want cited. A rising score with no readiness diagnosis tells you nothing you can act on.
