AI share of voice

AI share of voice is the share of brand mentions in AI-generated answers for a defined set of prompts that belong to your brand rather than a competitor's.

It is a relative metric, and the definition only means something once three things are fixed: the prompt set, the engines, and the competitor set. Change any of them and the number moves without anything about the brand changing. A share-of-voice figure quoted without those three is not comparable to anything, including its own value last month.

Measurement is sampling, not counting. AI answers are non-deterministic, so the same prompt asked twice can name different brands, which means a single run is an anecdote and the trend across repeated runs on a fixed prompt set is the measurement. Anyone reporting this to a client should say how many runs the number came from.

Share of voice answers a different question from visibility score or mention rate. Mention rate asks how often you appear at all, position asks where, and share of voice asks how much of the available attention you hold against named rivals. A brand can raise its mention rate while its share of voice falls, if the competitors improved faster.

Frequently asked questions

How is AI share of voice different from mention rate?

Mention rate is how often your brand appears across the prompt set. Share of voice is your portion of all brand mentions in the same answers, so it moves when competitors change even if your mentions do not.

How many runs make an AI share of voice number trustworthy?

Enough that the figure stops swinging between runs. AI answers are non-deterministic, so a single run on a single day is an anecdote. Report the run count next to the number.
